Character creation in Project Zomboid asks you to pick an occupation, traits, and quietly — the region where your story begins. That spawn choice is a map decision with permanent consequences. In Build 42, where farming, animals and longer crafting chains reward stable geography, starting in the wrong town can waste a week of travel before you ever place a generator or plant a crop. This guide compares the main spawn options on stable 42.20 so your first steps align with your build and risk tolerance. What starting location actually controls

Your chosen town determines three things you can't easily change later:

  1. Initial zombie density around you — the heat-map system concentrates hordes in urban cores, so spawn town = starting difficulty.
  2. Nearby loot categories — each town has its own mix of gun, food, medical and tool spawns.
  3. Default travel paths toward other settlements — the roads you'll loot first and the ones you'll retreat along.

It does not lock you in — you can walk or drive anywhere — but the first week is spent wherever you spawn, and the first-week plan is built around that.

The 42.20 spawn map

Build 42.20 reworked the spawn screen alongside the map. Community-reported observations:

  • The spawn UI now groups the playable starting towns with a short description of each, so you can compare before committing.
  • The reworked western towns (Ekron, Irvington, Brandenburg) and Echo Creek are the new-design spawn options — the map guide covers their POIs in detail.
  • Existing spawn towns (Rosewood, West Point, Riverside, Muldraugh) all received the 42.20 art pass — same names, reworked interiors and layouts.

Spawn town comparison (42.20)

Town Difficulty Loot focus Best for
Echo Creek Easy General, rural, chickens (Ovo Farms) New players — quiet, enough to learn, festival-zone generator spawn
Rosewood Easy Medical (clinic), moderate food Solo runs, first-week learning, quiet start
Riverside Easy–Medium Food, basic tools, large warehouse Balanced start, food preservation runs
West Point Medium Dense loot, more zombies Players who want loot density early and can fight (combat)
Muldraugh Medium Tools, warehouses, highway corridor Base-builders routing along the main road
Ekron Medium–Hard Guns (Barrel o' Gun), split layout Off-meta runs; the broken-train chokepoint is a real survival lesson
Irvington Medium Guns, hardware, farming Rancher/farmer runs (animals)
Brandenburg Hard Dense POIs, tornado rubble, military blockade Veterans — high loot, high risk, the steamboat and detention center

Match the town to the build

  • First character, no plans? Take Echo Creek or Rosewood. Quiet density, gentle loot, and you can learn the survival systems without a horde audit on day two.
  • Farming/animals build (farming, animals)? Irvington — factory farms and livestock to the east, plus the farming chain's tools in town.
  • Guns-and-hardware wants? Brandenburg or Irvington. Brandenburg's military blockade is also a guaranteed generator spawn.
  • Base-building run (base building)? Muldraugh or Riverside — tool spawns and rural bases within reach.
  • Veteran looking for a fight? Brandenburg or West Point. Dense, loud, and the 42.20 reworked interiors are worth exploring.

The wilderness option

If your goal is a borderless-wilderness survival run — pure foraging, trapping, no town at all — the 42.20 wilderness extends beyond the map edges and spawns per world seed. That's an advanced mode, not a starting recommendation: no buildings, no loot tables, no warm bed. The map guide explains how wilderness seeds work.

Town difficulty tiers and loot focuses are editorial, based on the in-site map guide plus community first-week reports; the 42.20 rework means per-town loot tables shift with patches and are not published. The spawn-screen grouping is community-reported — the exact UI on your 42.20 build is authoritative. Re-open the spawn screen before committing a character.
