Build 42 Game Modes — Every Preset Explained, From Apocalypse to Custom
Project Zomboid's named game modes are preset sandbox configurations — each one is a different argument about how the apocalypse should feel. Build 42 kept the classic trio (Apocalypse, Survivor, Builder) as the launch options, layered the challenge scenarios on top, and left the full sandbox open for custom tuning. This guide explains what each mode actually changes, who should play what on 42.20, and how modes relate to sandbox settings and challenge modes. Checked 2026-08-09.

The default modes
| Mode | Zombie difficulty | Core difference | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apocalypse | High | The intended difficulty: zombies are dangerous, loot is rare, infection is lethal | The real game — play this for the intended 42.20 experience |
| Survivor | Medium | More forgiving density and loot, same core rules | Learning the systems before Apocalypse (first-week guide) |
| Builder | Low | Minimal zombie pressure, emphasis on construction and survival systems | Base-building and crafting-focused runs (base building) |
| Custom | — | Start from any preset and tune the sliders | Your own ruleset — see the sandbox guide |
How modes differ from challenges
The named modes are sandbox presets — you could reproduce them with sliders. Challenge modes are different: designer-tuned scenarios with fixed starting states (wounded, naked, mid-winter, on a skyscraper roof) and baked-in rule twists. Modes set the difficulty; challenges set the scenario.
What changes between modes in 42.20
Because modes are presets, the differences are the sandbox sliders they set:
- Zombie population and speed — Apocalypse sets the highest sustainable tier; Builder drops it dramatically.
- Loot rarity — Apocalypse thins the tables, which is why farming, fishing and foraging go from optional to mandatory.
- Water/power shutoff and helicopter — present in Apocalypse and Survivor, often relaxed in Builder.
- Infection lethality — the classic Apocalypse run-ender; Survivor softens it, Builder often disables it.
Which mode should you play?
- First time in B42? Survivor (or an Apocalypse with population knocked down one notch). The 42.20 systems are new enough that Apocalypse punishes blind.
- Returning B41 player? Apocalypse — the systems changed, but the game is the same game (migration guide covers what to expect).
- Builder mindset? Builder, or a custom sandbox tuned to your project.
- Veteran? Apocalypse, then the challenge modes, then Louisville.
Custom is the real endgame
The community's long-term worlds are almost all custom sandboxes — a preset they've tuned over hundreds of hours. The 42.20 additions (animals, farming, deeper crafting) mean custom tuning now matters more than ever: the sandbox guide covers the settings that define a 42.20 world.

Mode names and their core differences follow the current stable game as reported across the community and PZwiki; The Indie Stone has not published a full official slider table for each preset, and patch changes can adjust preset values. The mode-select screen on your install is authoritative — the in-game descriptions are the source of truth for what each mode changes.
