The helicopter event is the one moment every survivor dreads: a flyover that drags zombies from an enormous radius toward its path — and toward you if it spots you. On default Apocalypse settings it fires once between Day 6 and Day 9, usually mid-morning through evening. The danger is the crowd it moves, not the aircraft firing at you. This guide covers the AEBS warning that predicts it, the two proven strategies, and how veterans weaponize the event to clear towns. Facts cross-checked against stable 42.20.0 on 2026-08-05.

The AEBS warning: you can know the day in advance

The Automated Emergency Broadcast System airs on the hour on any working radio (portable or house radio, powered by battery or house power). When the broadcast ends with "Air Activity detected," the helicopter is scheduled for today. That is your cue to execute your plan — not to start scrambling.

Prep before the warning day:

  • Find a radio and tune the AEBS frequency by around Day 5.
  • Stock a safe room with food and water for a full day of waiting.
  • Write your go/no-go decision for the vehicle before the warning day (fuel, spare, route).
  • Have a go-bag ready so you can grab and leave without panicking.

Strategy A: hide in place

If the helicopter has not seen you, staying inside works:

  • Stay away from windows, close every curtain, and turn out the lights.
  • Keep noise low: no unnecessary combat, no generators you can avoid, no outdoor engines.
  • Read skill books or watch TV to wait out the event without boredom draining your mood.
  • Only fight zombies already breaking into your room — do not go outside to "thin the herd."
  • A basement is the best room for this if you have one.

The helicopter will spend up to an hour searching your general area if it does not spot you, then leave. Some players report sleeping through the whole pass successfully. The downside: zombies lured into the area by the noise are still there afterward, and a secluded base can end up surrounded by packs that migrated into previously clear pockets.

Strategy B: drive away (the nomad play)

The safest method if your vehicle is reliable:

  • On the event day, load a day's worth of food and water and drive into the wilderness or along an open highway.
  • Keep moving slowly — the helicopter follows you, so the noise it generates happens where there are few zombies.
  • After it leaves, take a different route home and expect pockets of wilderness to contain zombies the event pulled out of town.

Driving fails if the car is questionable, the road is clogged, or you would lead the migration past your only safehouse. A wreck mid-event drops you next to a moving horde. Foot travel is the last resort: you are slow, exposed, and easy to re-spot.

If you get caught in the open

Do not run home — bringing the helicopter to your base is suicide. Walk (do not sprint, save endurance) toward a wooded area, a tall fence, or loop around buildings to break line of sight. Keep moving until the pilot loses interest, usually after hovering for about 60 real seconds once it spots you.

The Pied Piper: using the event as a weapon

Veterans clear whole towns with the helicopter. Stand in the middle of a main street, let the chopper spot you, then slowly walk or jog out of town into a forest or field. You will drag thousands of zombies out of the loot zones, leaving the town relatively empty. Plan a loop that does not end back at your base, and expect the migrating packs to linger — clear only what you need to secure doors before celebrating with loot runs.

What you can't do

  • You cannot shoot it down; it is not a physical object you can target.
  • It is detrimental to stealth even when it never sees you — zombies from a huge radius hear it and migrate to its path.
  • The event can re-attract zombies to areas you already cleared on its way out, so re-check the map after it leaves.

Timing (Day 6–9, daylight hours), the AEBS warning, hover/search behaviour, and both strategy descriptions come from PZwiki's Helicopter page (42.18-era stamp) and current B42 strategy references, cross-checked against stable 42.20.0 (July 29, 2026). Event frequency is sandbox-dependent — Apocalypse and Extinction enable it by default.
