Build 42 Traits Tier List — S-Tier to Trap, With Point Costs
Trait picks decide more of a Build 42 run than any other character-creation choice — the game's economy is points-in, survival-value-out, and the 42.20 rework changed several costs and removed or renamed a whole column of classics. This tier list ranks the current positives by consistent survival value across Knox County on default settings, and separates the negatives into "free points" versus "quiet run-enders." Point costs reflect stable 42.20 as verified against the traits guide and the character planner. Checked 2026-08-09.

How to read this: tiers measure value per point on a normal Apocalypse-style run — not meme builds, not speedruns. Occupation overlap matters (see the occupations guide before paying twice for the same stat), and a trait that's S-tier for a firefighter is merely fine for a forager.
S-tier — take these on almost every build
| Trait | Points | Why it's S-tier |
|---|---|---|
| Organized | −6 | More container capacity from day one. Every loot trip, every base, forever. The single most reliable positive in the game |
| Stout | −6 | Carry weight and melee knockback. The efficiency pick — Strong (−10) is the luxury version |
| Brave | −4 | Kills panic fights before they start; pairs with Combat Basics (combat guide) |
| Cat Eyes | −3 | Night vision at a discount after the 42.20 rebalance — cheap, always on |
| Fast Learner | −6 | 130% XP for everything. Compounds with the skill leveling guide over the whole run |
A-tier — strong, situational or build-defining
| Trait | Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | −6 | Sprint and endurance for relocation and loot exfil; the lighter sibling of Athletic (−10) |
| Keen Hearing | −6 | See behind you — reduces surprise grabs, especially in multiplayer latency |
| Inconspicuous | −4 | Smaller aggro radius, excellent for foragers and looters (stealth guide) |
| Graceful | −4 | Less noise from movement; combo with stealth paths |
| Low Thirst | −6 | One less daily survival upkeep task; mild but compounding |
| Handy | −8 | +1 Carpentry/Maintenance and faster construction — the base-builder's pick (base building) |
| Bushcrafter | −8 | The definitive wilderness package: carving, foraging, medicines, fire (foraging guide) |
B-tier — good when the build already wants them
| Trait | Points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dextrous | −2 | Faster container transfers; nice with Organized, not mandatory |
| Night Owl | −2 | Night-time stats; only matters if you intentionally play nights |
| Outdoorsman | −2 | Weather comfort; helps in the cold loop (winter preparation) |
| Eagle Eyed | −4 | Zoom range; quality-of-life, not survival-critical |
| Light Eater | −4 | Slightly less food pressure; farming makes this cheaper to ignore |
| Crafty | −3 | 130% crafting XP — only if your run is a production-chain run |
| Blacksmith Knowledge | −6 | Grants the blacksmithing head start; only on a forge-focused build (blacksmithing) |
C-tier — situational, skip unless the build calls for it
Gymnast-style skill-point traits (Sewer, Whittler, Artisan, Mason, Tinkerer, Target Shooter, Inventive) are C-tier as general picks: they buy a specific skill or recipe chain and shine only when that chain is the run's focus. The traits guide lists their exact effects — take them when the production chain wants them, not "because they're there."
Negatives: free points vs run-enders
The negative economy is where builds are actually made. These refund points for costs that are usually worth paying:
| Negative | Refund | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Smoker | +4 | The classic. Free points if you stock cigarettes; mild upkeep |
| Slow Reader | +2 | Cheap — reading already pauses the danger clock |
| All Thumbs | +2 | Slightly slower transfers; minor |
| Short Sighted | +2 | Reduced zoom; minor for most play |
| Prone to Illness | +4 | Manageable if you eat well and keep warm |
| Weak Stomach | +3 | Only bites if you eat rotten food; your own discipline controls it |
And the ones that quietly end runs:
| Negative | Refund | Why it's a trap |
|---|---|---|
| Thin Skinned | +8 | Every hit is more dangerous. The community consensus: not worth 8 points |
| Deaf | +12 | You lose the audio cue that keeps you alive — the worst trade in the game |
| Underweight / Overweight / Obese | +6/+6/+10 | Weight management is a whole extra survival loop; Obese + Athletic is impossible by conflict rules |
| High Thirst | +6 | Constant water hunting; pairs badly with the water shutoff |
| Conspicuous | +4 | More aggro — the anti-Inconspicuous, and noise is half the game (stealth) |
| Cowardly | +2 | Panic in every fight; the anti-Brave |
Tier-list pitfall: occupations give what traits cost
Before stacking trait points, check what your occupation already grants — paying for a trait your job hands you free is the classic double-spend. The occupations guide lists each job's free skills, and the character planner enforces the conflict rules live while you experiment.

Trait names and point costs are verified against the in-site traits guide and character planner (42.20 stable defaults). Tier rankings are editorial judgment based on default-sandbox survival value, aligned with the community tier-list consensus; speciality biome/build rankings will differ. The Indie Stone adjusts trait costs between patches without notice — re-open the character planner before committing a build.
