Yes — if your PC could run Build 41, it can run Build 42, but the official "minimum" no longer tells the whole story. Build 42 stable (42.20) is noticeably heavier than Build 41: the rewritten crafting, animal and lighting systems push real RAM and VRAM usage well above the Steam listing, and multiplayer needs more again. This page gives the official numbers, what a comfortable B42 build actually looks like, and the macOS/Apple Silicon specifics that the Steam listing hides.

Official Steam requirements (42.20)

The listing on the Steam page has not changed much since Build 41 — the CPU/GPU minimums are the same wording. What changed is what the game does with them.

Component Official minimum
OS Windows 10 64-bit · macOS 10.15+ · Linux (64-bit)
CPU Intel 2.77 GHz Quad-core or equivalent
RAM 8 GB
GPU Dedicated card, OpenGL 2.1 + GLSL 1.2, 2 GB VRAM
Storage 5 GB advertised, ~11.5 GB actual install on 42.20

Steam marks the game 64-bit-OS required; the 32-bit client is no longer supported.

What a comfortable 42.20 build looks like

Community-tested hardware targets for stable 42.20, based on pzfans.com hardware write-ups and server-hosting RAM benchmarks (checked 2026-08-04):

Setup CPU RAM GPU Notes
Low (30–40 fps, small towns) 4-core, ~2.7 GHz 8 GB 2 GB VRAM, OpenGL 2.1 Matches official minimum
Medium (50–60 fps) 6-core modern i5/Ryzen 5 16 GB 4 GB VRAM (e.g. GTX 1050 Ti+) Recommended for daily driving
High (steady 60+, hordes) 8-core i5-12400F / Ryzen 5 5600+ 16 GB RX 6600 / RTX 3060 Large-town exploration, MP host
Dedicated server (B42) 4+ cores 6 GB for 4 players n/a (headless) +~1 GB per 4 extra players

The two rules that matter most:

  1. RAM is the bottleneck. 8 GB is the floor but B42 worlds idle well above it; the game reliably runs smoother on 16 GB than on any GPU upgrade of equal cost.
  2. SSD is a real requirement, not a nice-to-have. The expanded Knox Country streams map chunks constantly, and HDD installs show stutter in new towns (Brandenburg, Ekron, Irvington) and on multiplayer vehicles. Our error fixes page treats HDD stutter as a common "lag" cause.

Apple Silicon and macOS specifics

The Steam listing predates it, but Build 42 ships an Apple Silicon native client — M1/M2/M3/M4 Macs run it without Rosetta translation, and it is markedly smoother than the 41-era Intel path. Community reports put M-series Macs with 8 GB in the "Medium" band above; 16 GB M-series Macs handle new towns and multiplayer hosting well. macOS 10.15 Catalina is still listed as the floor, but recent macOS versions (Sonoma/Sequoia+) are what most B42 players on Mac report using.

Multiplayer and server memory

Hosting is the one place B42's official minimum genuinely misleads:

  • Local host / co-op: the host PC needs the "High" RAM class — hosting a world for 3–4 friends while also playing pushes 16 GB to its edge, and 8 GB hosts will stutter.
  • Dedicated server: B42 is roughly 2 GB heavier than B41 at every player count. A vanilla 4-player B42 server needs ~6 GB (vs 4 GB for B41); add ~1 GB per 4 extra players and ~2–4 GB for mods. See the dedicated server guide for the full sizing table.

Storage and pagefile

Budget ~12 GB on an SSD. If you keep both a 41 and 42 install (see stay on Build 41), expect ~24 GB total. On 8 GB RAM machines, letting Windows manage a pagefile on the SSD (rather than disabling it) prevents OutOfMemory crashes in late-game towns — the error fixes page covers the memory flags if you see OutOfMemory in console.txt.
