Build 42 Character Planner — Occupation, Traits & Point Budget
Plan a Build 42 character the way the in-game creator works: pick an occupation, then spend trait points on positive traits and earn them back with negatives. Points update live, and traits that conflict (for example Athletic vs Unfit) are locked out automatically. It pairs with our occupations guide and traits guide, which explain why each pick matters.
How the point budget works
You start every character with 8 free trait points. Your occupation then adjusts the budget: Unemployed keeps all 8, Carpenter gives +2 (it pays you), Burglar and Veteran cost −6/−8 (they are expensive to afford). Positive traits cost points (Athletic −10, Organized −6), negative traits give points back (Smoker +4, Unfit +10). A negative total means the build as listed is over budget in the in-game creator.
Using conflicts
The planner mirrors the game's trait rules: traits that cannot coexist (Athletic vs Unfit, Keen Hearing vs Deaf, Dextrous vs All Thumbs) lock each other out — selecting one disables the other until you deselect it. Because the game charges you the difference when you swap conflicting traits, the planner just forbids the swap entirely for clarity.
What to pick first
If you are deciding live, let the guides decide for you: the occupations guide ranks the B42 classes (Blacksmith, Welder, Tailor and the rest), and the traits guide separates the strong positives from the traps. For a first character, Fire Officer or Park Ranger are the community-standard learning picks, and Fast Learner + Organized are the two positives almost every build takes.

Occupation and trait names, point costs and conflicts target the current Build 42 stable defaults as reported across community sources; The Indie Stone adjusts trait costs between patches without notice, so treat edge-case values as verify in-game — the character-creation screen is the final authority.
