Build 42 added a whole second row of skills, and most of them level nothing like Build 41's: no passive XP, no grinding one action forever — each new skill has its own cheapest loop, and several cap out early on purpose. Below are the fastest verified routes for every skill that didn't exist in Build 41, pulled from each skill's PZwiki page on stable 42.20. Universal boosters first: Crafty gives 130% XP to all crafting skills, Fast Learner does the same for everything, skill books multiply gains while their tier matches your level, and VHS tapes now cover Aiming, Animal Care, Blacksmithing, Electrical, First Aid, Knapping, Pottery, Tailoring, and Welding (community-reported list). Checked 2026-08-04.

Blacksmithing

The slow one — the wiki flatly calls it late-game. Routes:

  1. Small iron bands at a primitive forge: no skill required, 10 XP each, needs only scavenged metal, a hammer, and crude tongs. This is the 0–2 loop.
  2. Bar work (forge bar from chunks, cut bar, pierce chunk) at 10 XP each through the mid levels.
  3. Higher tiers: steel sheets (45 XP, Blacksmithing 4 at a simple forge) and coins (25 XP) — both wood-hungry because everything burns charcoal. Books I–V are effectively mandatory (full progression).

Welding

The wiki's own efficiency ladder:

Levels Action Rate
1–2 Dismantle car wrecks ~17 XP per 10 torch uses
3–4 Make scrap metal large knives 20 XP per 4 torch uses
2–4 alt Cut steel bars (reforgeable at a simple forge) 10 XP per torch use
5–10 Make metal sheets / cut small sheets 25 XP per 2 torch uses

Note: B41-style dismantling of random furniture no longer gives welding XP (except car wrecks), unless sandbox settings change it.

Masonry

  1. 0→1: crush large stones — currently the only recipe available for the first level.
  2. 1+: make stone blocks from stone (Masonry 1, 20 XP each, researchable from a stone block) — the same blocks your furnaces, forges, and walls consume, so leveling doubles as base production.
  3. Build fire pits, stone walls, doorframes, and window frames (Masonry 2, 20 XP each) (blacksmithing needs these stations).

Pottery

XP comes from pottery crafting recipes at the pottery bench/wheel. The practical route: stockpile clay early (foraging gives clumps of 2–4, forests are best; clay deposits can be dug with a sack and trowel), then grind the first level cheaply — roughly 75 XP to level 1 unlocks crucibles, which is why blacksmiths level pottery as a side quest. Higher pottery items feed glassmaking and masonry as their shared secondary skill.

Glassmaking

Every craft is a chunk of XP at a furnace with a crucible, glass blowing pipe, and pliers:

Item XP Level
Glass pane 25 none
Mirror 50 4
Drinking glass 45 2
Glass bottle 60 3
Glass jar 75 5
Wine glass / lantern glass 90 7
Champagne glass 90 9

Fastest start: spam glass panes from sand or broken glass (no level requirement). Magazines: Carlow Crystal Guide, Bottle Making at Home, Murano Glass Manual. Artisan trait starts you at +1. Jars matter beyond vanity — they're the container for the preservation chain.

Knapping

A deliberately short ladder — the wiki recommends stopping at level 6 because recipes run out:

  • Level 0: sharp flint flakes from flint nodules (the spam loop)
  • Level 1: stone chisels, stone-blade scythes
  • Level 2: flint saws — Level 3: large stone axe heads — Level 4: stone maul heads

Route: forage flint, hammer flakes until 4, craft heads for your handles, done.

Carving

Cheapest early loop per the recipe table: carve small handles and wooden rods at level 1 (10 XP each) from planks/logs, then medium handles and planks at level 2 (20 XP). Mid levels: cutting boards, large handles, knitting needles, pipes (30 XP at level 3), buckets and wooden spades (level 4). Endgame carves pay big — a bat at level 9 is 90 XP. Whittler (+2 Carving) or Bushcrafter makes this your day-one skill (trait costs).

Tailoring

B42 tailoring splits into knitting, armor assembly, and leather:

  • Level 1 loop: knit beanies, scarves, doilies (9 XP each) — needs yarn/thread.
  • Level 2: socks, wool hats, legwarmers (13 XP), assemble forearm/shin armor (10 XP).
  • Level 3–4: sweaters and balaclavas (20–30 XP), forge metal armor pieces (5–20 XP) — yes, tailoring now builds armor too.

Leather items consume the tanned hides from the butchering chain. The Tailor occupation starts at level 4 and pays +2 points.

Animal Care & Butchering (the farm pair)

Animal Care XP comes from husbandry actions: milking, shearing, giving water, petting, collecting eggs. Route: adopt chickens plus one milk breed early and do every daily action yourself — the loop is literally chores (livestock setup).

Butchering XP is roughly proportional to meat harvested: butcher animals and remove parts, or fillet fish (filleting moved to Butchering in B42 — see our fishing guide). Use a butcher hook to gain leather plus extra meat per kill. The tanning side (softening beam, brain tan, tannin barrel, drying racks; ~7 days per hide, temperature-dependent) feeds tailoring.

Tracking

XP comes from finding track types in search mode ("Animal Tracks") and sneaking near deer or rabbits. Tracks aren't highlighted — you stumble on a yellow outline, then read direction, size, and freshness, with more detail as you level. The wiki flags the skill as unfinished; treat it as a wilderness bonus, not a grind target.

Verified on 42.20 · Last checked 2026-08-04

XP values and recipe gates come from PZwiki's individual skill pages (42.18-era stamps) re-checked against 42.20.0. The VHS tape list and Crafty/Fast Learner multipliers are per the current trait/skill navboxes; several pages carry improvement banners for exact XP formulas, so treat per-action values as the reliable core and re-verify after patches.
