Build 41 to Build 42 Migration — Saves, Mods, and Settings
Build 42 "Expanded Crafting and Balance" went stable on July 29, 2026 as version 42.20.0, ending an unstable cycle that ran from December 17, 2024. If you have years of Build 41 muscle memory, this page tells you what carries over, what breaks, and how to restart cleanly — based on the official Build 42 feature list, the Steam community guide "B41 Veterans' Guide to Build 42," and launch-week reporting. Checked against 42.20 on 2026-08-04.
Save compatibility: B41 saves do not transfer
The headline first: Build 41 saves cannot be loaded in Build 42. Launch coverage of the stable release (TechTimes, July 29, 2026) confirms saves won't transfer, and fan wikis agree the save formats are incompatible. Plan a fresh world:
- Keep your B41 install and saves archived if you want to revisit them — they remain playable on the legacy branch where offered.
- Back up your
%UserProfile%\Zomboid\Savesfolder anyway before any branch switch; see our error fixes guide for paths and backup procedure. - Don't attempt transplants: characters, bases, and items do not migrate between unrelated worlds.
Mods: assume everything is broken
B41 modpacks should not be assumed compatible. The veterans' guide lists the breakage surface: recipes, crafting UI, skills, animals, maps, foraging, traits, zombie behavior, loot, items, and multiplayer sync can all fail in ways that are not obvious at startup. Note also that B42 multiplayer arrived later in the unstable cycle and went through long cleanup passes — treat it as playable-but-unsettled, not as the mature B41 MP ecosystem.
The safest migration test, straight from veteran-server practice:
- Fresh save, no mods
- Add mods one at a time, testing each
- Conservative player counts on servers
- Add complexity only after the world feels stable
For servers: back up the whole server directory before upgrading, match Workshop mod lists exactly between host and clients, make sure everyone is on the same Steam branch (stable vs unstable), and restart the server after Workshop content finishes updating.
Settings migration: presets are not what they were
The B41 trap is clicking "Apocalypse" and assuming it means the old Apocalypse. On 42.20, Apocalypse is treated as the canon world: no zombie respawn, different loot assumptions, more realistic animal and crop timelines, adjusted vehicle/gas/wound settings, and softer muscle strain than early unstable builds.
Other setting-level changes to know:
- Presets: Rising is the calmer classroom for learning farming, animals, and workstations; Outbreak is a fast tour of new systems; Extinction sprinters are an all-day threat — later builds removed the day/night speed effect that once made them night-focused.
- Literature split: skill books and recipe resources are now separate sandbox categories, so "raise literature" no longer floods the world with everything.
- Zombie distribution uses a generated heat map with a noise layer; a Voronoi/noise sandbox option exists but it is not a "restore old distribution" toggle — disabling it can sharply increase spawned zombies. A separate option gives zombies a percentage chance to open doors.
- Clothing discomfort has a Discomfort Modifier sandbox option.
- Fluids: siphoning needs a hose, jerry cans hold 20 liters, and gasoline evaporates from open containers.
Character creation changes
Build 42.16 ran a full occupation pass (Police Officer, Park Ranger, Construction Worker, Security Guard, Carpenter, Chef, Rancher, Farmer, Electrician, Fishing Guide, Doctor, Nurse, Welder, Blacksmith, Mechanic), with further tweaks in 42.18 and 42.19. New or reshaped starts include Blacksmith (forge/anvil production), Welder (distinct from blacksmithing), Rancher (animal care + butchering), Tailor, and Burger Flipper. The new skill map also reaches traits: Crafty (crafting XP, conflicts with Fast/Slow Learner), Mason, Inventive (recipe research), Artisan (pottery/glass), Tinkerer (+1 Maintenance), Target Shooter (+1 Aiming).
Point-economy traps for returning players: Smoker is +3, not the +4 you may remember; Cat's Eyes and Wakeful cost more; Wilderness Knowledge was renamed Bushcrafter and absorbed the bow-drill bonus Outdoorsy lost; Desensitized now also grants discomfort immunity. Do not trust old build planners or early B42 videos without checking the current character screen — several traits and occupations changed again between 42.16 and 42.19.
Your first B42 save: a veterans' checklist
The veterans' guide's core advice: make the first save a scouting save, not a forever save.
- Fight in short bursts and watch muscle strain before clearing neighborhoods.
- Open the craft/build UI while safe — learn recipe search, workstation requirements, and "used in recipe" browsing.
- Read map clutter: flyers, newspapers, and annotations point to places B41 ignored.
- Plant something early, but never build the food plan on one crop.
- Forage before desperation: clay, flint, dogbane, limestone, and magazines start production chains.
- Check basements, bunkers, work vehicles, trailers, and safehouses — they are progression now.
- Pick one new chain first: farming+animals, foraging+hunting, blacksmithing+welding, masonry+pottery/glass, or tailoring+butchering. Bolting every system on at once turns B42 into homework.
B41 habits to unlearn: endless melee clears (strain), max-armor-everywhere (discomfort and heat), shotgun aiming XP farming (no per-pellet XP), and treating every van or basement as scenery.
