Build 42 Underground — Basements, Bunkers, and Panic Rooms Explained
Build 42 lifted the map's height limits and opened a whole floor of Knox Country that Build 41 never had: procedural basements under ordinary houses, Cold War bunkers, panic rooms, and even "Wayne's World"-style sets underneath houses that fit them. Underground spaces carry better loot and worse odds — fewer exits, darker rooms, tighter sightlines. This guide covers what's confirmed on 42.20, from the official Build 42 feature overview, PZwiki's basement and bunker pages, and community-reported tactics from the veterans' guide. Checked 2026-08-04.
What spawns underground
Per the official feature overview, underground content appears underneath whatever houses can fit it, as a combination of unique and generated locations that change on each run — and a sandbox option governs the frequency. World seeds determine basement placement (and can be shared), so a seed with great basements is a real thing to trade.
PZwiki's Basement gallery lists around 130 random basement variants, and the themes tell you where to look:
| Theme family | Examples |
|---|---|
| Storage & workshop | Home workshop, construction storage, toolboxes, metal shelving, book storage, clothing storage |
| Food & cold storage | Chest freezer with storage room, butcher room, grow room |
| Weapons & hunting | Hunting rooms (multiple variants), tall lockers |
| Luxury & hobby | Theater room, game room, poker room, secret bar, home gym, band practice, photography studio |
| Survival-special | Survivor room, small bunker, divided rooms with survival bunker, medical room with bunks, prison cell |
A second set of fixed basements spawns in every world. Community favorites (community-reported): the Muldraugh Police Department basement and the West Point general-store basement under the gas station, both rich in planks and supplies.
Named bunkers worth a trip
March Ridge Cold War bunker (5671 Folger Street, inside the school perimeter, ~9898 × 12626): a decommissioned 1991 facility roughly 60 feet down — entrance tunnel with three large garage doors that are hard to open without a key, then decontamination room, power room, dining hall, gym, sick bay, armory, dormitories, and storage. Loot is thin except leftover military gear: ALICE belt and suspenders, military backpacks, canned food, antibiotics, and bandages.
Doe Valley Secret Bunker is a confirmed location (and a guaranteed generator spawn), though its contents aren't documented yet. Muldraugh's railyard also holds four bunker-like structures.
Panic rooms exist per the official feature list — found in suitable larger houses — but their loot isn't documented; treat any you find as a bonus safe room.
The risks
Community-reported from veteran play, and worth taking seriously:
- Fewer exits. If a fight goes bad underground, the staircase is your only door. Clear downward slowly, never sprint into an uncleared basement at night.
- Darker rooms, tighter sightlines. B42's new lighting makes nights "darker, blacker… and a lot more dangerous" (official) — that's doubly true underground where no ambient bounce reaches.
- Enclosed-space cleanup. Corpses rot in your base's air: the miasma rules apply fully underground (corpse sickness guide).
- Stairwell combat. Vertical engagements behave differently; zombies stagger and turn better in B42. Don't trust B41 habits.
Lighting and retreat discipline
- Carry two independent light sources (flashlight + candles/lighter) before going down; light negates the foraging/vision darkness penalty and lets you actually read rooms.
- Open the exit first: clear the staircase, then work room by room outward from it. Know the way out before you've seen the loot.
- Leave a marker route in large bunkers — the Cold War bunker's tunnel-and-corridor layout is easy to get turned around in.
- Retreat on bad odds: stairs are chokepoints in both directions; fighting up them against a horde is how basement runs end.
Power before you move in
A basement base needs power testing before commitment: generators cover a 20-tile radius with 3 floors of vertical reach, so one unit can serve cellar + house (generator mechanics) — but exhaust is lethal indoors, so the generator itself stays outside (placement rules). Early B42 had generator bugs around basements and elevation that were later fixed; if your lights flicker underground on 42.20, re-test placement rather than assuming the mechanic is broken.
