The first week in Build 42 looks like the first week you remember — until it isn't. Muscle strain punishes marathon clears, the fluid system changes how water and fuel behave, basements and bunkers double your scouting surface, and the zombie heat map quietly rewires crowd patterns you memorized in Build 41. This plan assigns concrete goals for days 1–7 on stable 42.20, using mechanics verified on the current wiki and the veterans' transition guide. Checked 2026-08-04.

Before you spawn: pick the right preset

For a first B42 run, keep it simple. Apocalypse is the canon baseline — no zombie respawn, realistic crop/animal timelines. Rising is the calmer classroom if you came specifically to learn farming, animals, and workstations. Avoid Extinction until you know the new combat feel; its sprinters are an all-day problem now.

Day 1 — Shelter and water banking

The Knox Event begins in July 1993, so heat and spoilage are live concerns from hour one.

  • Finish clearing your building or relocate; judge neighborhood density before committing.
  • Fill every bottle, pot, and bucket while the taps run. In B42, rain collectors keep filling while you're away, boiling is faster, empty cans can boil water, and purification tablets can clean limited amounts of tainted water — but week one is about banking tap water.
  • Barricade ground-floor windows except your planned exit; rig a sheet rope from an upper window if you sleep upstairs.

Day 2 — Tools, medical, and the crafting menu

Expand one block toward a hardware store or pharmacy: hammer, nails, saw, screwdrivers, bandages, disinfectant, suture needles, painkillers. Then do the B42-specific thing: open the crafting menu while safe. Learn recipe search, workstation requirement lines, and "used in recipe" browsing now — under pressure, a blocked craft can cost you a night. Fight any stragglers in short bursts; muscle strain makes long B41-style clears expensive.

Day 3 — Clothing, discomfort, and storage

Upgrade to denim or leather jackets, sturdy pants, and good shoes — but the thickest armor is no longer an automatic answer. Heavy gear can cause discomfort tied to stress and heat; carry a lighter "base chores" set alongside your loot-run kit. Organize storage: food shelf, medical drawer, weapon corner, junk crate. Grab thread, needles, and scissors — tailoring is a real production skill now, not just patching.

Day 4 — Cooking, preservation, and the first seeds

Cook perishables before they rot; soups and stews stretch ingredients and mood. If you found seeds and a shovel, plant on day four — July's viable crops are radish (30 days, the fastest food in the game), lettuce, kale, broccoli, turnip, sweet potato, tobacco, and garlic. Don't bet on one crop, and don't plant anything whose season you can't verify (seed packets and magazines teach growing seasons). Start looking for jars and lids — preserved food is your post-fridge plan. Forage nearby too: clay shows up near water after rain, and flint, dogbane, and limestone start crafting chains later.

Day 5 — Power awareness and generator scouting

Water and power shut off on a sandbox timer — community-reported defaults land somewhere between roughly days 7 and 30, with around day 14 common. Prepare now: identify a generator, stock gas cans, collect flashlights and batteries. B42's generators come in variants: premium brands degrade slowest, the cheap blue ValuTech unit is louder and degrades faster, and the old generator is loudest. Test before committing — generator radius defaults to 20 tiles with 3 levels of vertical reach. Fuel is a fluid now: siphoning needs a hose, jerry cans hold 20 liters, and open containers lose gasoline to evaporation.

Day 6 — Scouting: basements, bunkers, and work vehicles

Mark distant loot hubs, but scout differently than in B41:

  • Basements and bunkers are new underground spaces — better loot, fewer exits, darker rooms. Scout with light, know the way out, test power before moving in.
  • Work vehicles are loot labels: blacksmith and masonry vans, mobile libraries, butcher and tailoring trucks, propane trailers. Open the weird ones.
  • Flyers, newspapers, and map annotations point at places worth checking.
  • Crowd patterns differ from B41 memory — exterior population now follows a generated heat map with a noise layer.

Day 7 — Consolidate and prep for events

No new mega-projects. Confirm 3+ days of food and a week of water; re-check barricades and the escape rope; stash a spare weapon and clothes in a hidden crate off-site. Kill stragglers near doors before a helicopter or siren pass stacks them. If you're eyeing livestock, zone and fence the pen area now — but don't adopt animals before feed and water logistics exist; a hutch is also mandatory or the nighttime predator meta-event can wipe chickens.

Weekly habits that carry forward

  • Noise budget: gunshots and explosions carry farther than B41 reflexes expect.
  • Sleep before ambitious runs; exhaustion raises panic.
  • Mood management: varied food, skill books, clean clothes.
  • Skill growth: VHS tapes now train Aiming, Animal Care, Blacksmithing, Electrical, First Aid, Knapping, Pottery, Tailoring, and Welding — don't skip video shelves.

When the week goes wrong

Death happens. Log the failure mode — thirst after shutoff, a bite during a panic sprint, a helicopter-led horde — and change one variable on the next spawn: traits, preset, or shutoff timer. B42 is still Early Access; hotfixes shift loot and balance, so re-verify critical assumptions after each patch.
