Build 42 doubled Knox Country's surface area: three new towns, 1,400 unique buildings, 20,000 new tiles (Build 41's entire map had 15,000), plus borderless wilderness beyond the old map edges and a rewritten zombie distribution system. This guide maps the new territory on stable 42.20 — what to loot where, how the wilderness works, and what replaced the old spawn patterns. Sources: the official Build 42.20 feature overview, PZwiki's Knox Country and Challenges pages, and community-reported tactics. Checked 2026-08-04.

The three new towns

Brandenburg — the tornado town

The most northwestern of the three, on the Ohio River. Its southeastern section was devastated by a tornado, which means rubble routes and unusual sightlines. POIs worth a beeline: the P.S. Delilah (a docked steamboat), Brandenburg Detention Center, Judicial Court, Pondview Shopping Center, Maj. Saunders Middle School, a Walk-in Medical Clinic, Memento Ammori, a destroyed train yard, and a military blockade (also a guaranteed generator spawn). Bright Valley Trailer Park sits nearby.

Ekron — the split town

The furthest west, reachable from Echo Creek. Its quirk: a broken train blocks the main street, leaving one road north connecting the west and east sides — that single connector is both your loot route and your chokepoint. POIs: Ekron Community College, Barrel o' Gun, Pharmahug, Family Medical Center, Home Sweet Gnome, and a church.

Irvington — the farming-and-guns town

Southwest of the map, with Irvington Speedway to the north and factory farms with livestock to the east — a natural rancher destination (animals guide). POIs: Well Regulated Militia Gear & Supply, Hobbs & Perkins Hardware, Farming & Rural Supply, Brott Cattle Farm, and Irvington Elementary. Gun-and-hardware shopping in one trip.

Echo Creek — the new spawn town

Mainly rural, with the Ovo Farms chicken operation to the east, Gas 2 Go, Guns Unlimited, and Speedy GO — plus the festival zone, another guaranteed generator location. An excellent B42 first spawn: loot enough to start, quiet enough to learn. Existing towns were upgraded too — Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron, and Dixie all received reworks.

Beyond the towns: signature POIs

The expansion sprinkles destination loot across the countryside: Coalfield (a Wild-West-themed tourist attraction in Doe Valley Forest with antique ovens, rain barrels, and a smith & farrier shop), the Sunderland Hills Sanatorium in abandoned Tanglewood, a huge lakeside guesthouse, the race track, and the steamboat. These behave like mini-dungeons: committed trips, real loot, plan the drive (work vehicles make the hauling practical).

The borderless wilderness

Map edges no longer end the world: huge expanses of randomized wilderness extend outward, seeded per world (seeds can be shared). Two official caveats shape how to use it:

  1. It is not full procedural generation — no random towns, roads, or buildings will generate. Expect pure forest survival.
  2. Servers can generate a complete wilderness map with no civilization at all — the ultimate foraging and trapping run.

Underground content follows the same seed logic: basements and bunkers roll per world (underground guide).

Zombie distribution: heat maps and noise

The old uniform spread is gone. Officially, the new spawn-map system makes hordes more urban-focused, with a Voronoi-noise backend adding believable randomness; world seeds determine the distribution. Community-reported tactics from the veterans' guide:

  • Expect quieter "corridors" between hot spots — route planning beats brute force.
  • Indoor spawns are handled separately from the exterior heat map.
  • The Voronoi/noise sandbox option is not a "restore B41 distribution" toggle — disabling it can sharply increase spawned zombies.

Challenge maps

Verified current challenges on 42.20: A Really CD DA, Winter Is Coming, Top of the World (start atop a skyscraper), and 28 Minutes Later (a world of sprinting zombies — the official blog calls it "28 Seconds Later"; the wiki name is authoritative). The teased "Many Years Later" challenge map (Xeonyx's post-apocalyptic crafting test bed) appears in the Build 42 feature list but is not on the current challenges screen — treat it as not yet shipped and watch patch notes.

Town locations, POIs, and tornado/train/speedway details from PZwiki's Knox Country pages (42.11-era stamps); map doubling, building counts, wilderness rules, and heat-map system from the official 42.20 feature overview; challenge list from PZwiki's Challenges page (current for 42.20.0). Corridor routing and the Voronoi-option warning are community-reported. Omitted: exact wilderness tile extents and per-town loot tables — neither is published.
